 Health Mutts, located in Fresno California, was started in August of 2002 due to the entrepreneurial spirit and drive of its owner Diane Young. She has a passion for animals and when her dog Annie, a West Highland White Terrier, developed skin allergies she decided to develop a tasty dog treat that would not aggravate her skin condition. That led to the first batch of dog cookies and experimenting with quality ingredients that produced the desired effect, her dog Annie loved them and responded to them. They were then taste tested by many dogs that gave them two paws up. Diane Young said, "My surveys showed other people with dogs on special diets wanted wheat-free, corn-free cookies. Our dog cookies have the same ingredients that you would find in cookies for people, just a little more bland, thankfully animals get very excited about them." This was the light bulb moment when Diane Young knew it was time to start her own business. In the beginning she did it all herself, baking cookies, putting together gift baskets, packaging products, marketing, sales and maintaining an e-commerce website www.HealthMutts.com, but today she has help and is expanding her business through sales over the internet and at retail stores. Her primary goals are to provide outstanding products and customer service.
Health Mutts cookies provide a healthy dog treat using top quality ingredients, which includes whole eggs, fresh grated cheese, carrots, and real peanut butter. Each dog cookie is made with lots of love, and is hand rolled, hand cut, and hand packed. They contain no salt, sugar, preservatives, artificial color or flavors.
Health Mutts has expanded its dog cookie line with four flavors including; Carrot Crunchers, flavored with garlic powder with grated carrots; Cheddar Cheezers, with lots of grated cheese; P-nutters, with peanut butter and cinnamon; and Wheat-Free Cheezers, with cheese and rolled oats. Many people have been purchasing the Carrot Crunchers and giving them to their dogs and horses too. Dog Cookies are made from people quality ingredients with no preservatives, salt or sugar.
Health Mutts also has several gift baskets for dogs and people depending on the occasion, which might include a new puppy, dog birthday, special occasion or a pet-loss sympathy basket. The gift baskets are a perfect gift for dogs and their people! The pet-loss sympathy basket is specially designed to help someone through the very difficult time of losing a beloved pet. Health Mutts even will include a bag of dog cookies, free if there is a surviving dog in the family.
In June 2003 Health Mutts launched a new venture that includes doggie birthday cakes and party favors, that will be offered locally. We are excited about this endeavor and look forward to catering dog birthday parties.
One of the missions of Health Mutts is to give back to the community and Diane Young does that by donating any broken cookies to the no-kill shelter, Animal Rescue of Fresno. Young also participates in events to raise funds for other animal shelters, such as doing the Wiggle Waggle Walk last May to benefit the Valley Animal Shelter, which is a no-kill shelter currently under construction. Young often donates gift baskets for silent auctions and fund raising events; most currently she did this for the Central Valley Coalition for Animals, the Susquehanna Service Dogs and Paws with a Cause.
